Bolton: Ironkids 2021 come to town centre

The sports focused day, part of the Ironman UK weekend, saw youngsters take part in all kinds of races and athletics events, getting valuable exercise and having plenty of fun in the process.

Residents and parents alike were also out to see the Ironkids at play.

Ironman race director Rachel Jackson said: "We are delighted to be back for this weekend of sport.

"To have the biggest Ironkids event here in the UK is an honour and always so much fun with kids getting a taste of what it feels like to become an Ironman!

“It’s a brilliant day out for families and showcases the positive impact triathlon has on a community."

Youngsters took part in races, rock climbing, walking on stilts and much else over the course of Saturday.

Organisers had worked hard to ensure that the games were open to all comers, including children with additional needs like seven year old Ibrahim, who uses a wheelchair and was thrilled to be able to cross the finish line.

Young Mika Hamer who has cerebral palsy and Alfie Jack who has down syndrome, were also over the moon at taking part.

While the youngsters hit the race tracks, fairground stalls lit up the town centre with plenty of fun activities for children and parents alike.

Next up, the grown ups will take to the tracks in what promises to be an exciting finale to the two day event on Sunday.

Ms Jackson said: “On Sunday, the only ever edition of Ironman 70.3 Bolton takes place, we have worked tirelessly behind the scenes to ensure that athletes have an incredible race experience.

"We value the incredible support of local institutions and suppliers, as well as participants, sponsors and volunteers who help make the event possible."
