AN urgent appeal for volunteers has been made to help the work of the Motor Neurone Disease Association in parts of the borough.

The South Lancashire branch of the MND Association covers Westhoughton, Tyldesley and Atherton and is on the lookout for fresh blood.

Christine Hoskin, branch vice-chairperson, said: "Volunteers are the life-blood of the MND Association and the South Lancashire branch could not exist without them.

“Volunteering with the charity also gives people the opportunity to develop their skills, meet new people and take part in new experiences.

“There are lots of ways people can get involved and support the association.

"We recognise that all time is valuable so any time that you can give would be appreciated.

“Nationally we have 7,000 volunteers. Locally we have a small team which we would like to expand.

"We are looking for people of all ages and backgrounds who have skills and talents and time to offer.

“There are various roles including involvement with fundraising, campaigning, staging events and social media. Our area is extensive and includes Westhoughton, Tyldesley, Atherton, Wigan, Standish and Golborne.”

The charity also has association visitor (AVs), who are trained to visit those living with the disease and their families. The role of an 'AV' involves a formal interview procedure being conducted and a training programme which is nationally administered and can be accessed through their national website.

Cris added: “Anyone who wants to help can contact me via my e-mail cris.hoskinmnd@gmail.com or call me on 0759 026 6849.
