WANDERERS return to League One action when they head to Hillsborough to take on Sheffield Wednesday on Saturday afternoon (KO 3pm).

Ian Evatt’s men enter the game on the back of a 4-1 win against Liverpool Under-21s in the Papa John’s Trophy on Tuesday night.

The Whites sit seventh in the league table and could climb into the play-off places with a win against the Owls.

Team news

Gethin Jones is available after missing Tuesday night’s game with a dead leg suffered in the win against Shrewsbury, while Xavier Amaechi, Andrew Tutte and Liam Edwards remain sidelined.

Sam Hutchinson could feature for the hosts after missing the last two fixtures but George Byers misses out through injury.

Opposition lowdown

Darren Moore’s men were relegated from the Championship last season following a dramatic 3-3 draw with Derby on the final day.

The Owls had a busy transfer window, bringing in 14 new players including Saido Berahino and Bailey Peacock-Farrell.

The Yorkshire outfit sit 12th in the league table after picking up 15 points from their opening 10 fixtures back in the third tier.

They recorded a 2-1 win at Mansfield Town in the Papa John’s Trophy on Tuesday night thanks to goals from Lewis Wing and Florian Kamberi.

Head-to-head

  • Wanderers have faced the Owls 123 times in their history, with a record of 41 wins, 28 draws and 54 defeats
  • The Whites’ last win in the fixture came in October 2017 when Sammy Ameobi and a Sam Hutchinson own goal handed them a 2-1 victory at the UniBol

Last meeting

The Owls ran out 2-0 winners when the sides last met back in March 2019 thanks to goals from Steven Fletcher and Rolando Aarons.

Craig Noone went closest for Wanderers but his effort was cleared off the line in the second half.

The match was overshadowed by Wanderers’ problems off the pitch, with players and staff receiving their wages 12 days late.
