KEEP fit guru Mr Motivater will be in Bolton to celebrate Black History Month.

Events are taking place across town to mark the month designed to highlight achievements made by the Black community, are often overlooked in the teaching of history.

Bolton's Black History Group was formed by Marlene Stringfellow, who alongside Stephen Hall, has put together this month's events, which include Zoom watch parties.

Highlights include a talk tomorrow on the de-colonisation and racism in higher education.

And on October 18, ex Bolton Wanderers Roger Walker and Tendai Chiswala reflect on playing football as black men in the 80s and 90s.

On Thursday, October 28 from 7.30pm there will be a Zoom watch party with a boxing documentary featuring Samuel L. Jackson and Alan Rickman following the life of Jack Johnson.

Jack was the first Black World Heavyweight Boxing Champion and the film will follow his journey to winning a title in what was then, a white dominated sport.

Mr Hall said: “There’s importance in people knowing the lost part of history.

“You have Motown music, athletes like Daley Thompson, who I grew up watching and young stars like Lewis Hamilton talking about it.

“There are lots of things in history most people in Bolton won’t know, so this is a chance to watch and heart the stories of the country’s famous black people.”

The nation’s original PE teacher, Mr Motivator will join author Lemn Sissay at the Victoria Hall in Bolton for a celebration night.

Real name Derrick Evans, he was one of the most popular faces on morning TV, getting people off their sofas and fit, something he came back to after the 2020 lockdown saw the insurgence of home workouts.

Mr Hall, who is a historian himself, said: “Black people are told they don’t have a history here, but their history has contributed massively to England’s culture.”

It’s the first time the group are organising events since starting up last year in lockdown.

The NHS are highlighting the careers of the Trust’s BAME community such as ward clerk, Natasha Little, who moved from Birmingham four years ago to join the Bolton team.
