DECLAN John says Wanderers need to “take the game” to Portsmouth ahead of Saturday afternoon’s League One clash.

The Whites will be looking to build on last weekend’s comeback against Gillingham and return to winning ways in the league.

John is expecting a tough test from Danny Cowley’s men but insists Bolton have what it takes to get something from the game.

“It will be a tough game, obviously a long trip down as well. It will be tough but I’m sure all the boys are looking forward to it,” said the defender.

“I think it’s all about what happens on the day. I think it’s down to us really – we can only really look at ourselves.

“We can look at the opposition but it’s all about how we take the game to them.”

John returned to the side against Gillingham following a spell on the sidelines due to a groin problem.

The Welshman admits his recent injury struggles have been frustrating and is hopeful that the worst is behind him.

He added: “It’s been a bit up and down for me. I started the first game and then in for a week, out for a week with little knocks and niggles.

“But I think I’m back to nearly full fitness now. I think with the time off I’ve had and my rehab and stuff, I feel a lot better now.”

Liam Gordon had a run in the side while John was out of action, and the Welshman insists competitions for places will have a healthy impact on the squad going forward.

He said: “(Liam) has done well when I’ve been out of the team, and it’s good to have two or three players in each position for options for the gaffer to give him a headache.

“Even if you look on the other side, you’ve got Brocky (Harry Brockbank) and Gethin (Jones).

"I think you always need players to be pushing each other to make each other better.”
