Residents have called for action to be taken on a Horwich residential road blighted by crashes after a tragic accident over the weekend.

Just after 10pm on Saturday, a car crashed into a tree in Lever Park Avenue. A 36-year old man, who was a passenger in the vehicle, was pronounced dead at the scene, while a three-year-old, an eight-year-old and a 31-year-old woman were all taken to hospital where they remain in a stable condition.

Tributes, including flowers and cards, have been left at the scene of the incident with one saying “To our family member tragically taken in an horrific accident may you rest in peace. See you again soon.”

Lucia Islip, who lives near the scene, said: "I was sat in the back room and heard a strange but very loud thump noise and came out and it was shocking to see what had happened, it’s absolutely awful.

“There’s been so many accidents on this road in the past few years it’s scary, something needs to be done.”

Her husband Robert said his car, and his son's vehicle, which were parked on the side of the road were written off when a car crashed into them a few years ago.

"We tell anyone that comes here now to make sure they don’t park on that bend as it’s so dangerous," he added. “We’re genuinely thinking of moving out of the area as it happens far too often.”

Earlier this year, June 5, a car crashed into the garden wall of the house next door, completely destroying it.

The residents of the next house, who wished to remain anonymous, said: “There’s been far too many crashes on this road in the last few years."

Neighbours say they are concerned as there are two schools on the road.

The resident added: “You feel you have to keep your wits about you when walking along the road, we’re all genuinely scared about a car coming off the road at any point which is terrible.

“I’d been cutting the grass half-an-hour before the car destroyed the the wall and threw debris all over the garden.

"We’ve called on the council and even tried to contact Andy Burnham about getting something done.

“After the last incident we asked if it would take a fatality for some action to be taken. We just hope something can be done now.”

Ward councillor, Marie Brady has been contacted by residents after the incident, asking if something could be done to prevent accidents on the road.

She said: “I’ve written to the highways department to see if this area has been reviewed and if the data suggests there’s something that needs to be done.

“I’ve asked as a result of this tragic incident if there’s absolutely anything we can do to try and prevent this happening again.

"No-one can know what has happened yet and it is very early days but I will keep in touch with the highways department to see if anything can be done.”
