THE Mayor of Bolton has paid tribute to Honorary Alderman Peter Finch, describing him as a ‘strong and caring man.’

In recognition of his contributions to the borough, Peter Finch, who passed away aged 84 after a short illness, will receive a full civic funeral – details of which will be released soon.

Mr Finch served as Mayor of Bolton in 1998/99 and as Mayor of Westhoughton in 1986/87.

In memory of Peter, the current Mayor of Bolton, Cllr Linda Thomas, said: “I am so sad to hear of the death of our friend and colleague Peter Finch.

“This is the end of an era, with the passing of this strong and caring man who devoted much of his life to the town of Westhoughton and its residents, always fighting their corner.

“Peter was always fundraising for charity and to help our senior citizens enjoy some quality time."

She added:“I will always owe Peter much personal gratitude for the way he helped and supported me as a new councillor.

“My deepest sympathy to Peter’s family.

"We will miss our friend.”

He was appointed an Honorary Alderman in 2000, Mr Finch was a town councillor and borough councillor in Westhoughton for many years, serving as mayor of Westhoughton from 1986-87 and Mayor of Bolton from 1998-99.

Partner Rita Fairhurst, who died in January this year, served as mayoress when he was mayor.

Details in regard to the funeral will be shared later this week and the flag on Bolton Town Hall will remain at half-mast until dusk on the day of the funeral, in memory of the ‘caring man.’
