Fire services were called to Church Meadows in Harwood in the early hours of this morning after a freezer caught on fire.
Two crews from Bolton and one from Bolton North were sent to the scene at around 3.10am.
The appliance in the garage had caught on fire and the smoke alarm had not worked.
One occupant was given oxygen treatment as they had inhaled smoke and the property was ventilated.
A fire spokesman said: “That property was found to have a smoke alarm not working.
“They were only alerted by the smell of smoke, luckily for them.
“We fitted a smoke alarm, that offer is always there if people cannot fit a smoke alarm we will provide if they call 0800 555 815.”
