WANDERERS boss Ian Evatt felt Joe Olowu’s red card was the right decision in his side’s 3-0 win against Doncaster.

Eoin Doyle, Elias Kachunga and George Thomason were all on target as the Whites returned to winning ways in League One.

Olowu was shown a straight red for a foul on Dapo Afolayan late in the first half and Evatt insists it was a reckless challenge.

“We’re pleased with the win,” said the Bolton boss. “I thought the first half an hour, we looked a bit passive, a bit slow with our play.

“We put a lot into Saturday and as I said, I thought we performed well and deserved something. It looked like it had taken its toll but then we get the goal, it sparked us really.

“We’ve missed Eoin being in those positions – that predatory instinct. After that, we took over and won the game comfortably.

“For me it is a red card. I’ve had a bug bear with these types of tackles for a long, long time.

“When you can’t make a genuine attempt to play the ball, it is endangering an opponent. For me, it was just a kick at Dapo and the right decision.”

However, there was yet another injury blow for Wanderers when Lloyd Isgrove was forced during the first half.

Afolayan also picked up a fifth yellow card of the season which means he will miss Saturday’s clash with Cheltenham.

“Lloyd’s got a hamstring strain,” added Evatt. “He overstretched and felt a twinge in him hamstring.

“When you keep going to the well with the same players, you’re asking a lot for them and they can pick up these types of injuries.

“Obviously I’m gutted with that one and Dapo being suspended doesn’t help things.”

Liam Gordon returned to the side, slotting in at right back despite it not being his usual position.

Evatt was delighted with the defender’s performance and insists has all the tools to be successful in League One.

“I thought he did really, we asked a lot of him. Liam is a young player that is developing all the time,” said the Bolton boss.

“He’s played games this season and he’s had to step aside at times, but when he’s positive and he runs forward and plays forward and backs his ability, he’s a good talent.

“He’s got good attributes – pace, power, good with the ball. It’s just confidence with Liam and when he believes in himself, he can achieve performances like tonight.”
