A MAN who attacked his father in his own home has been jailed for a year.

Bolton Crown Court heard how Colin Smith has previously served lengthy sentences for offences including robbery and when he was released from jail on July 30 his 67-year-old father allowed him to stay at his Lancaster Road, Hindley, home.

David Lees, prosecuting, said on October 8 Smith asked his father to get him a bottle of wine.

"The implication was that if he got him this bottle of wine and he was allowed to drink it then it would be his last bottle and he would start being sober the next day," said Mr Lees.

Smith drank the wine but Mr Lees said he became paranoid about a car pulling up outside the house.

"That led to an altercation between him and his father," said Mr Lees.

Smith punched a door and then turned on his father.

"He grabbed him with both hands and threw him to the floor," said Mr Lees, who added that Smith made threats towards his dad.

"Mr Smith senior decided he had had enough at this stage and unlocked the door and left the house."

Smith, who was described as "raving", followed his father.

He had a steak knife in his pocket and was involved in an altercation with neighbours but there was no violence.

Police were called and Smith was arrested.

In a victim statement Smith's father said he was frightened of him at times.

"One time he is a good guy and the next he is a monster," said Mr Smith Snr.

The court heard that 41-year-old Smith has 20 previous convictions for 48 offences. He pleaded guilty to assault, criminal damage and possessing a knife.

Patrick Buckley, defending, said Smith's behaviour stems from drinking.

"It is a trigger substance that leads to this maelstrom of distress and upset that it has caused," he said.

Sentencing Smith, Judge Timothy Clayson told him: "It is clear you went on a rampage in your father's house."
