A 39-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving and assault after emergency services were called to a road traffic collision on Bolton Road at the mini roundabout.

A 92-year-old woman, who was inside the property, was taken to hospital after she suffered serious leg injuries.

Emergency services were called to Bolton Road and White Horse Grove, Westhoughton, just after 5:15am where a BMW had crashed into a bungalow.

The car had driven through a metal fence and through the brick wall and window at the front of the property.

The collision was attended by Atherton and Hindley Fire and Rescue Service, the ambulance and the Technical Rescue Unit from Leigh.

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Police said: "Officers were called to Bolton Road, Westhoughton, just after 5:15am, to reports a car had been in collision with a house.

"A 92-year-old woman was inside the property at the time and suffered serious leg injuries.

"She was taken to hospital where she remains in a serious condition.

"A 39-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving and assault.

"He also received hospital treatment for a head injury."

A resident who lives nearby said he woke up this morning to see the ‘blue flashing lights’ but ‘didn’t hear anything’ when the collision took place.
