WANDERERS defender Liam Edwards has extended his loan at non-league Southport until Saturday, January 8.

Edwards joined the Sandgrounders last month and has made five league appearances for the National League North outfit.

The Merseyside club have won five or their six league matches since his arrival and currently sit in the play-off places.

The defender spent nearly two years on the sidelines after suffering a fractured kneecap in a training ground accident back in January 2020.

He made his return to first-team action last month, coming off the bench in a 3-0 win at Rochdale in the Papa John’s Trophy.

Speaking ahead of Edwards’ initial loan move, Wanderers boss Ian Evatt said: “We were delighted for Liam to come on get a few minutes at Rochdale after all the hard work and effort he has put in to get back on a football pitch.

“We have got a lot of quality defenders here so this is the best chance for him in the short term to go and play some first-team football and further build up his fitness.”

The Whites also announced that young defender Ryan Colvin has made a permanent move to Prescot Cables.

Colvin signed his first professional contract over the summer, becoming one of four second-year scholars to agree new terms along with Finlay Lockett, Jay Fitzmartin and Luke Hutchinson.

“We’d like to wish Ryan all the best for the future,” said a club statement.
