WYCOMBE boss Gareth Ainsworth says his side’s win against Wanderers is “a big result” in the race for promotion.

Brandon Hanlan and Jack Grimmer struck either side of half-time to condemn Ian Evatt’s men to a 12th league defeat of the campaign.

Dion Charles went closest for the Whites but the forward was denied by David Stockdale during the first half.

Ainsworth says his side stuck to their gameplan and insists it could be a crucial result come May.

“If I am honest [the second goal] couldn’t have come at a better time. It did ease the pressure. Jack has been phenomenal for us,” said the Wycombe chief.

“He knows his job and executes what I ask to the letter. It was a brilliant goal and he is a great lad to have in the squad.

“This is a big result-away at Bolton on a Tuesday night. These are the games that really mean a lot.

“We needed to make sure we were professional in what we did. We know what Bolton’s strengths are and we had to negate them.

“The boys carried out the plan really well and limited Bolton to long balls to [Amadou Bakayoko] who we knew would be a target. How we dealt with that would be key to the game.”

The result leaves Evatt’s men 18th in the League One table – just three points above the bottom three.

The Whites are back in action on Saturday afternoon when they welcome Ipswich to the UniBol (KO 3pm).
