A MAN has been arrested after being caught on camera waving a "Samurai sword" at a shopping centre.

According to Greater Manchester Police, the man was caught on CCTV wielding the sword in Walkden Town Centre shopping mall on Tuesday night.

Police officers were called to the scene and blocked the man's car before seizing the weapon and arresting him.

A police spokesperson said: "A CCTV operator saw a male waving a Samurai sword at Walkden Town Centre this evening.

"Police were called, and C Relief XM of GMP Transport Unit attended en-masse, blocking in the subject vehicle and safely seizing the knife, arresting the male in question. All in a day's work."

Images from the scene show how up to three police cars were used to block the man's car before officers were able to arrest him.

This latest arrest comes amid longer term concerns about safety and violent behaviour at the Bolton Road shopping centre.

Last month, on January 9 police were called after a mass brawl involving up to 40 young people broke out, threatening staff and shoppers.

In response, police pledged to step up patrols in the area and do more to tackle anti-social behaviour at the shopping centre.
