A LITTLE Hulton man who carried out a savage attack on a man he had acted as an informal carer for has been jailed.

Minshull Street Crown Court heard Tom Smallman claimed William Murden owed him money for work he had done.

After drinking six pints he attacked him outside a pub.

He dragged him on the ground, punched him in the chest and sat on top of him.

Mr Murden was in hospital for nine days with fractured ribs.

In a victim impact statement he said been left struggling to sleep as a result of what had happened.

Smallman, 28, was detained and admitted at the police station what he had done.

He appeared in court to be sentenced after admitting causing grievous bodily harm during the incident in July 2020.

The court heard he had a previous conviction for the assault of a police officer.

Mark Malone, defending Smallman, said: “He is ashamed of his actions on the day in question.”

He added he had employment in refuse disposal which would be lost if he were sent to prison.

Recorder Neil Usher said there was no alternative to a prison sentence.

He said: “It would sent out the totally wrong message to the public as to how seriously the courts view a serious assault causing serious injury.”

He jailed Smallman, of Peel Lane, for 15 months.

Mr Recorder Usher said the sentence had been reduced as it would be his “first taste of custody.”
