Local shops and businesses are a vital part of Bolton’s local economy.

We have a fantastic range of newsagents, independent grocers, food outlets, hairdressers, cafes, restaurants, pubs and other enterprises all providing jobs and services that our communities rely on. We also have many a great many people operating all kinds of small and medium sized enterprises ranging from local building firms to window cleaners.

We all know that many businesses have really struggled over the past couple of years due to the pandemic as well as economic problems. We also know that the big supermarkets and online delivery services have come to dominate even more of the retail sector.

Bolton, like many other towns and cities up and down the country, is blighted with boarded up shops which is tragic to see. Sadly our local businesses are being hit by the government’s National Insurance increase at a time when they can least afford it.

Local businesses need more support from the government who should cut local business rates and ultimately scrap them altogether. Any new business taxation needs to be fit for purpose in the 21st century.

We cannot turn back the clock, but there is a great deal that can be done to support local retailers and other enterprises. This is support that can be provided by government, the council and ultimately ourselves as customers.

It’s more important than ever that we support local shops and businesses.
