A new micro-bar has pledged to bring old fashioned values back to Bolton with a music- free bar.

The Diversion on Corporation Street is a new bar run by two brothers looking to bring socialising back to bars without music and TVs.

Originally from London, Gerald moved to Bolton 30 years ago.

Richard has since relocated to the town along with other members of the family.

Both retired, they wanted to fill their time with something meaningful and decided to open a bar to give people a place to socialise without music or other loud distractions.

Richard said: “We wanted to go back to what bars used to be like 50 years ago. Somewhere you go in and get a drink chat to people.

“Communication is important especially for older people living alone who like to go to places like this where they can talk and not have loud music blaring over speakers.

“We think there’s an opening for something like this in Bolton especially because bars owned by big companies must put in the beers the companies want in, but we can do what we like and have almost anything.”

The bar only openedthis week and is already attracting great feedback.

Richard, who used to be a financial director accountant in London, said: “I was doing nothing. I was bored and now I’m working 12 hours a day until we hire staff a few months down the line.

“We’re old fashioned in that we believe that bars have gone the wrong way with music and karaoke, with some even becoming restaurant bars.

“With us it’s back to basics and even though it’s not a big site, the costs aren’t as high to run it and we have seating outside.”

Richard and Gerald are situated opposite the Market Place Centre and think this will help attract customers.

Richard said: “We aren’t a bar that will cause trouble. Our clientele is mostly 40 and over and people who want to come to a bar like ours that they can talk and socialise at.”
