A former Bolton town centre car park is set to be transformed into housing as part of a new multimillion pound development.

The £10m building work will see more than 50 homes built on the site of the former car park off St George’s Row and Bark Street, opposite the old St Helena Mill site.

The development, to be known as “St George’s Row” is being led by Northwest housing provider Your Housing Group with Forshaw Construction appointed as contractor.

Your Housing Group director of growth Richard Jones said: “This development will be a great addition to the town centre, bringing a brownfield site into use, building on a sustainable location and adding to the wider regeneration of the town centre.

“It will provide high quality affordable homes and enable many local people to take their first step on the property ladder with options for shared ownership.”

The site is currently a former car park

In total St George’s Row will be made up of 58 homes, with a mixture of two, three and four bedroom houses which will be available to rent and for shared ownership.

The location of the new housing plan is within walking distance of Queens Park, as well as several local schools, shops and other amenities with views of the River Croal to the south.

It is opposite the historic St Helena’s Mill site, first built in 1777 and close to Bolton town centre and public transport links to Manchester and elsewhere in the region at Bolton Interchange.

Your Housing Group describes the planned homes as “high quality”, “affordable” and says they will create a “thriving residential community.”

Planning permission for the new homes on the 1.45-acre site was granted by Bolton Council last December to the previous owners.

This means that when Your Housing Group bought the land, planning permission was already in place.

The building work comes as part of a nationwide strategy by the government to build more affordable housing in areas of the highest need.

Your Housing Group was granted £87.5million in funding in January 2019 for this purpose as one of the government housing agency’s strategic partners.
