A MAN is in a critical condition in hospital after an assault.
The attack took place near the junction of Westbourne Avenue and Bramhall Street, Great Lever on Sunday afternoon.
The man, in his 50s, was taken to hospital with serious injuries.
The area was cordoned off throughout the day and evening.
A spokesman for Greater Manchester Police said: "At around 1.29pm on Sunday 8 May police were called to a report of an assault near the junction of Westbourne Avenue and Bramhall Street, Great Lever.
"Officers attended and a man in his 50s was located with serious injuries.
"He has been taken to hospital where he remains in a critical condition.
"Anyone with information, or anyone who witnessed this incident is asked to contact police on 101 quoting log 1709 of the 8th May 2022."
Residents reported a heavy police presence in the area with both police and ambulance on the scene.

There were also a number of cars parked within the cordoned off area, which the owners were unable to gain access to.
A resident said: “I was home and did see the police and ambulance, but I didn’t know what was going on and police were advising us to stay indoors."
Another neighbour was unable to reach their car when they tried to leave for work.
They said: “I was getting ready for work but couldn’t leave because I couldn’t get down to my car. I didn’t see anything and haven’t spoken to anyone else about what happened.”
