A police helicopter was scrambled in the early hours of the morning with residents reporting hearing whirring blades for at least half an hour.

People living in the Astley Bridge area around Arundel Street reporting hearing the helicopter flying above them between around 4am and 4.30am on Tuesday morning.

Some of the residents reported having their sleep disturbed after being woken up by the noise.

A resident at Holden Mill on Blackburn Road said: “I was mysteriously woken up at around 4am, wondering what on earth all the noise was.

“I was woken up by the noise and then I realised it must have been the helicopter.

“It was my first day back at work which was very annoying because I wasn’t able to get back to sleep again.”

She added: "It was probably looking for someone, it must have been important at that time in the morning."

As yet, police have not confirmed the nature of the incident or why the helicopter was called into action over the course of the night.

But in previous incidents across the borough the helicopter has been used to chase down suspects after robberies, assaults and other crimes.

Greater Manchester Police have been approached for comment.
