INTERNATIONAL travel seems to be back on the agenda for many, despite airports and airline companies struggling to facilitate the demand.

The pre-flight admin and the time spent in airports and on planes can somewhat hamper the experience, so to enjoy a holiday experience without the hassle and see a loved one based on the opposite side of the world, then, you would have to get creative.

And that is exactly what residents at The Bakewells Care Home in Deane have done.

The Bolton News: Michael, Pat and Vi Michael, Pat and Vi

Mrs Vi Scott, 90, and some of her fellow residents took part in some “Armchair Travelling”, whereby they joined in a zoom call to Perth, Australia with her son, Michael, and his wife Pat, who have lived in the country for over 17 years.

In advance of the occasion, Michael and Pat sent flags, signs and Aussie-style cork hats for the resident’s entertainment and to bring a flavour of the far-away land.

The residents spent the week before the call learning and reminiscing about all things Australia, including landmarks, food and animals.

They took part in games and quizzes and, to create as close to an authentic experience as they could, even made their own digeridoos and passports complete with entry visa’s.

Activities Co-ordinator, Julie O’Connor said: “We all had a great time learning Aussie slang and the residents finished off the day with a sing-along ending with a wild rendition of ‘Waltzing Matilda’.

“It was very generous of Michael and Pat to send all the goodies from Australia.”

Mrs Scott said: “It was great to see Michael and Pat, it was almost like they were in the room with us.”
