BOLTON'S rich history will be explored this weekend as a well-respected local author Dave Burnham launches his new book.

The 'A-Z of Bolton ' book launch will take place on Saturday, May 21 - and will include a reading of a newly discovered unpublished Bill Naughton tale.

The book is described as a fascinating exploration of the history of Bolton highlighting its people, places and event over the centuries.

The Bolton News:

Dave will give an illustrated talk, introducing the book at 11am in the lecture theatre in Bolton Central Library.

A–Z of Bolton focuses on the town’s history and seeks to provide a link between its past and present.

Well known people, including Nat Lofthouse, Peter Kay and Fred Dibnah are mentioned, but the book also features many more who have been forgotten including Henry Ashworth, the Quaker model mill owner, martyred priest George Marsh and experimenter in mesmerism Dr Joseph Haddock.

The Bolton News:

There is a mix of well-known and obscure history - including the 1651 execution of James Stanley, 7th Earl of Derby; the 1946 Burnden Park disaster, but also former slave James Watkins, the first street demonstration against Salman Rushdie’s The Satanic Verses and Foxy, the last clogger in town.

Illustrated throughout, this engaging and informative book will appeal to all those interested in the town’s heritage.

The book is priced £15.99 and a discount will be applied at the event.

The event is free and no need to book.
