The nature of the fire is currently being investigated by the fire service and police.

Fire investigators were also called later in the morning.

The fire services also assessed adjoining properties to make sure the fire had not spread.

A spokesperson from Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service said: "At 10.10am on Wednesday 18 May firefighters were called out to a building fire on Carlton Street in Farnworth following reports of smoke coming from the property.

"Two fire engines from Farnworth Fire Station and one from Bolton North Fire Station attended the scene and tackled the fire on the first floor of an end terrace building using a hose reel and two breathing apparatus.

"There was one casualty, outside the property on arrival, suffering from smoke inhalation and they were assessed at the scene.

"Adjoining properties are being assessed by fire crews and an investigation is currently being carried out."

There was a cordon in place for a short time, preventing residents from getting through from the bottom end of Carlton Street.

One of the neighbours asked the firefighters to move the engines, but at the time they were told that it was only possible to get through if they had an emergency.

One resident at the scene said: “I could smell smoke and wanted to see what was going on.

“But I didn’t see anything.”
