A driver with three flat tyres and stolen plates was arrested after being chased down by police on the wrong side of a major road.

The black Ford Fiesta was spotted by officers on the A580 East Lancashire Road heading towards Salford on Sunday afternoon.

The driver had been coming in from Leigh towards Salford before turning back to Leigh again, travelling on the wrong side of the A580 after officers from the SRT Tasking Team gave chase.

A Greater Manchester Police spokesperson said: “The Fiesta was bearing stolen plates from a Dacia and was spotted by the SRT Tasking Team on the East Lancs towards Salford.

“Stung by ME44 it would then turn with three flat tyres back into Leigh having travelled contra on the A580.

“The car was boxed on Kirkhall Lane.”

After the car was stopped, officers discovered that it had originally been stolen in Wigan and the driver was arrested.

This comes amid ongoing concerns about anti-social behaviour and criminality on the roads in Bolton, Salford, Wigan and all across Greater Manchester, with several other cases reported around the city region over the weekend.

Anyone with concerns about problem driving can contact police on 101 or can call independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
