Labour MP Christian Wakeford said the Prime Minister has been drafting "half-arsed apologies" and asked if he had changed his mind on a windfall tax "just to save his own neck".

The MP for Bury South, who defected from the Tories to Labour, mentioned the expected increase in the energy cap in the House of Commons today, Wednesday, and said: "I know the Prime Minister has been busy drafting and redrafting his half-arsed apologies rather than helping the people of Bury South.

"But at which work event did he realise Labour's call was the right thing to do, considering he and his party voted against it last week, is it just to save his own neck?"

The chamber struggled to hear Mr Wakeford over the noise coming from both benches, including Conservative jeers.

Boris Johnson said: "I heard enough to have a rough idea of the nonsense he was talking.

"What we're doing is not only supporting people now, but we will continue to put our arms around the people of this country as we did during the pandemic and beyond."
