BOLTON is seeing a new boom in roller skating, over 30 years after the once popular Navada rink in the town burned down.
Young couples on first dates, friends at birthdays and families taking children to learn, all used to love the Nav, as it was known, in Spa Road.
It was all the rave back in the day, when roller-skating was the on-trend thing to do on the weekends, and for Navada it worked successfully until the people that loved it started growing older and stopped going.
After the old Navada burned down in 1989, it seemed roller-skating was a thing of the past.
But now after many years, thanks to TikTok and the lockdowns, the activity is back and with celebs pulling all kinds of roller fashion stunts, the younger generations are loving it.
A new Nevada, spelled differently, opened in Bolton’s Burnden Sports Centre Complex in 2013, five years after being launched in Little Lever.
Dennis Hobson, who owns the rink, said: “The old Navada was fabulous, it was the place to be, and lots of couples met their partners at the roller rink.
“It was the big venue in Bolton and was so popular in the 60s.
“We were thinking about something to do for children, so I thought I’d open a roller-skating rink.”
The Nevada will bring back memories for people who once skated at the old venue.
Dennis said: “We’ve definitely seen more people come in now since TikTok and other things.
“We have people of all ages coming in and we see new people that we’ve never seen before.
“We even do a lot of work with schools because this is what it’s all about, letting the kids have fun.”
With teachers coming in to coach children and even adults, almost anyone of any age can join the fun.
Dennis said: “When people come from all over the country, they say it’s small but they love it.
“We don’t have multiple rooms like the old one but we have music and lights and fun.”
