A man has died after a major crash on a Bolton motorway in the early hours of this morning, with a police investigation now underway.

Police confirm that they were called to the M61 northbound at around 5.25am on Friday morning to reports an Audi had been involved in a crash.

Road users reported major delays throughout the day and officers have now confirmed that a man in his 30s, who was treated at the scene, has now died in hospital.

A Greater Manchester Police spokesperson said: “We were called to the northbound M61 to reports an Audi A5 had been involved in a collision at about 5:25am.

“Emergency services attended and treated a man in his 30s at the scene but, sadly, he was later pronounced dead in hospital.”

Traffic has since returned to normal on the M61.

Officers from GMP’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit are appealing for anyone with any information about the crash to come forward.
