CALLS to make a notorious junction safer have been made after a woman was left fighting for her life following a crash.

Residents want improved safety measures after the third incident in a month in Chorley New Road, at the junction with Beaumont Road.

The crash happened on Saturday evening involving a Volkswagen Golf and a Kia Rio.

It comes just weeks after a cyclist was killed at the same junction.

The latest crash took place just after 10.10pm on Saturday involving a black Volkswagen Golf and a red Kia Rio on Chorley New Road, at the junction with Beaumont Road.

Five people were injured with one woman being left in a life-threatening condition.

Four patients were discharged from hospital the same night after treatment.

A 43-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving and later released under investigation.

The crash comes just weeks after there was a fatality near the same junction in which a cyclist was killed and just days ago there was another collision involving a cyclist.

Ward councillor Andy Morgan has now called for action to be taken to make the junction safer as a matter of priority.

He has asked Bolton Council's highways officers to contact Transport for Greater Manchester in 'light of yet another accident over the weekend' to come up with a scheme for the junction.

Cllr Morgan told The Bolton News: “I have spoken to highways numerous times about this and only last week we were talking about what we can do.

“We are very conscious of it and know that you can only get one car safely across, but they are looking at alternatives.”

"The junction requires cars to wait in the middle of the road before turning right onto Victoria Road, but the way is not clear until the lights have turned red, which means a car waiting to turn must make the decision to go quickly or wait until an oncoming car gives them way.

"The confusion of this system is what residents fear causing horrible accidents to constantly occur."

One resident believes there is a need for a right turn filter light from Chorley New Road going into Victoria Road.

He said: “It is a nightmare and dangerous to have to always wait in the middle of the junction to turn right to only realistically only get through when your own lights have turned red.

“It only needs a filter adding and to offer an 8-second gap to enable vehicles to safely turn.

“No vehicle can safely turn right until the lights have already changed to red, and given the cars are already sat there committed in the middle of the junction, then it only needs 5-seconds before it’s back to the incoming traffic.

“No other signal times would need to be altered and no build up would be caused by such minimal delay, which after all is for purely safety reasons.”

Cllr Morgan says he has been told by transport chiefs that a 'right turn light' would cause congestion - but he stressed he wanted the junction looking at urgently.

A spokesman for Greater Manchester Police said: "Officers from our Serious Collision Investigation Unit have begun to conduct their initial enquiries into what caused the collision, and are asking anyone with information or dash-cam footage from the area on Saturday night to contact them as it could prove to be vital evidence.

"Anyone with information should call us on 0161 856 4741 quoting incident 3327 of 28/05/2022.

"Details can be passed anonymously to the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 11."
