A wrestler is representing his hometown at the Birmingham Commonwealth Games this summer.

George Ramm from Farnworth is heading to the games starting at the end of July till August 8 as part of the wrestling team.

It will be the third time the 25-year-old joins the games having debuted in 2014 and won fourth in the Gold Coast games.

Wrestling at 65kg, he said: “It feels amazing to be able to represent Team England in my third games.

“It's a real privilege to have the England flag on my chest whilst competing.

“Preparation is going very good too, just two weeks ago I came third in Albania and next week I fly to Italy for a competition and 10-day training camp.”

George started wrestling at the age of 11 and fell in love with it straight away when coach Eddie Kavanagh visited his school.

He said: “My dad also wrestled and pushed me to go as far as I can in the sport.

“I love wrestling because of how hard you have to work to be able to complete at a high level, you can't blame anyone or make excuses for your losses it's all on your shoulders and I enjoy that feeling.”

Growing up in Bolton, George is most thankful to his former coach Eddie, who inspired him into the sport.

He said: “I'm very proud of growing up from Bolton and no matter where I live or how far I go in the sport, I’ll never forget where I came from and I think us Boltonians are a tough group of people, and that transferred into my style of wrestling.

“My wrestling in Sharples was massive for my development as an athlete, the head coach Eddie motivated me and pushed me always to be my best in everything I did.

“I owe so much to Eddie and Sharples wrestling club because without them I couldn't have come as far as I have done now.”

Although Eddie is now living in Germany after moving there to train for the German Bundesliga, a higher-level competition.

The wrestler, who works as a block paver, says he needs financial aid to attend the training camos as it takes him out of work.

He said: “Financial support is needed and due to the increase in training camps and competition, I will be forced to miss a lot of work therefore less earnings coming in.”
