Film crews have been in Bolton town centre yet again this week with the streets around Le Mans Crescent adorned with vintage cars.

The impressive display was in place on Tuesday evening as crews prepared to start work on Nolly, a three-part drama for ITV starring academy award nominee Helena Bonham Carter amongst others.

The series will focus on the life of iconic soap actress Noele Gordon, best known for her role on seventies series Crossroads and is written by acclaimed Doctor Who and It’s a Sin screenwriter Russell T Davies.

The series marks the latest appearance Bolton will make in high profile TV dramas in recent years

Commenting when the drama was first commissioned last Autumn, Helena Bonham Carter said: “Noele Gordon was a fascinating, complex, brilliant and gutsy woman, none of which I knew before I read Russell T Davies’ script.

“I’m so thrilled to help tell Nolly’s long overdue and largely forgotten story. Russell’s screenplay is a work of brilliance and I hope I’ll do him and Nolly justice.

“I can’t wait to start.”

Noele “Nolly" Gordon was one of the most famous TV stars of her generation before being suddenly axed from Crossroads in 1981.

Now the series filmed in Bolton will tell her story.

Russell T Davies says: “One of my very first jobs in TV was a trial script for Crossroads, and I've wanted to write the story of behind the scenes on that show for 40 years. At last, the truth can be told!”

For Bolton, this marks yet another opportunity to showcase the town before national audiences, with sights around the borough already familiar sights to viewers thanks to appearances on Peaky Blinders, Ridley and others.

The latest drama to feature the town is being produced by Quay Street Productions.

Founder Nicola Shindler said: “I couldn’t be prouder or more excited that the first drama we will be filming for Quay Street Productions is this beautiful script by Russell T Davies.

“And that Helena Bonham Carter will star as such an iconic British woman is dream casting.”

Nolly will be filmed over the coming months and is expected to air later this year.
