Many happy returns to Elsie Moss who reached the grand age of 106!.

Elsie celebrated the big birthday at Astley Grange care home in Astley Bridge.

Elsie's daughter, Joan Hill, aged 70, told The Bolton News about Elsie’s life.

She said: “She was born on May 31, 1916, on the same day as the Battle of Jutland.

“She went to school at St George's Junior School and then Folds Road Secondary School, both in Bolton.”

Joan continued: “She started work at the age of 14 at Crosses & Winkworth Mills as a bobbin weaver, then graduated to work in the offices.”

Amazingly, Elsie met her husband, Charlie Moss, on a blind date in 1939 and then didn’t see each other for three years as he was called up.

Joan continued: “They married in April 1942 while he was on leave for one week, friends and neighbours contributed to the wedding reception, a cake and a buffet.

“They then didn’t see each other until the war ended in 1945. Charlie had risen to Sergeant rank and was awarded a military medal for bravery.”

Elsie and Charlie had two children, David who was born in February 1948 and Joan who was born in November 1951.

Elsie has five grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and three step-great-grandchildren.
