A DRIVER who repeatedly committed motoring offences has been jailed for 14 months after he led police on a high-speed chase through Bolton.

The pursuit only ended when Mohammed Amin crashed into another car.

Hannah Forsyth, prosecuting, told Bolton Crown Court how police spotted a BMW being driven dangerously on Claypool Road, Horwich, just before 1pm on May 11.

“The driver, later identified as Mr Amin, attempted to conceal his face from the police constable,” said Miss Forsyth.

The officer indicated he should stop but instead 34-year-old Amin, sped off, reaching speeds of 80mph while weaving through traffic on both sides of the road.

Amin then hurtled along Chorley New Road and Park Road towards Bolton, reaching speeds of 50mph in a 30mph area.

“The defendant eventually lost control and crashed the vehicle into a Kia Stonic,” said Miss Forsyth.

Amin fled the car but was caught in a nearby back alley.

The court heard that Amin already had 16 convictions for 29 offences including two offences of drug driving, driving while banned and dangerous driving.

At the time of his latest crime he was on licence from prison after being convicted of drug dealing.

Amin, of Bradford Avenue, Bolton, pleaded guilty to dangerous driving, driving whilst banned and having no insurance.

Simon Leong, defending, told the Honorary Recorder of Bolton, Judge Martin Walsh: “He is contrite. This is a gentleman who, on his release from his last custodial sentence in Autumn last year, was supported by members of his family.

“They had been a pillar for him to start making more sensible decisions in his life.

“On the day in question he made an incredibly stupid decision to get behind the wheel of that vehicle.”

He added that Amin knew he shouldn’t have been driving as he had not taken an extended retest at the end of a disqualification period and had “panicked” when he saw police.

Mr Leong added that Amin hopes to change his behaviour.

“In his own words, he is too old to be wasting his adult life going in and out of prison all the time,” said Mr Leong.

“He wants to put behind him stupid fantasies in relation to vehicles and really try to grow up and become the man he was meant to be.”

Judge Walsh sentenced Amin to 14 months in prison and banned him from driving for four years and seven months.

“This was an appalling piece of driving,” he told Amin.
