The Retired Members branch of Unison Bolton has opted to support the striking rail workers.

The strike will take place over three days from tomorrow, Tuesday.

More than 40,000 staff from Network Rail and 13 train officers will take part.

Now the retired group of Bolton Unison has opted to support this at recent meeting.

Secretary Jackie Winstanley said it was time for people to say “enough is enough".

She said: “I don’t own a car and like many of our retired members I am reliant on public transport so any dispute involving transport workers will inconvenience me and my members, but it’s necessary.”

She added: “With inflation at nine per cent after a decade of declining wages, workers are on average £68 a month worse off than this time last year it’s time for people stand up and say enough is enough.”

Vice chair Derek Coleman also backed the move.

He said: “This government did nothing to stop the disgraceful sacking of 800 P&O workers and blocked legislation to stop fire and rehire, so why are we surprised when they want to demonise rail workers for exercising their legal right to strike?”
