Citizens Advice is offering guidance to those who could be in line for compensation due to flight delays and cancellations.

With the understaffing of airports and airlines causing havoc, holiday makers are at increased risk of not getting to where they want to be on time, if at all.

If a flight gets significantly delayed or cancelled all together, it is most likely that those due to be on that flight will be eligible for compensation from the airline.

For those who have been in such a situation, or have flights booked this summer and are anticipating the nightmare scenario, Citizen’s Advice Bury and Bolton have put together a hand guide on their website.

There are a number of variables that will change whether or not someone has the right to compensation, including who is at fault for the cancellation or delay, the distance of the flight and how delayed the arrival time is.

Richard Wilkinson, CEO of Citizens Advice Bolton and Bury said: "Anyone is eligible for compensation from a cancelled flight so long as the cancellation is the airline's responsibility, the replacement flight delays your arrival by three or more hours, and the flight was cancelled less than 14 days before departure.

"The amount of compensation you are entitled to is dependent on when the flight was cancelled, the distance of the flight and the departure and arrival times of the rescheduled flight.

If the delays are less severe, the airline might have to provide food and drink, access to phone calls and emails or even put passengers up in a hotel if they flight is delayed overnight.

“The initial process of claiming compensation from an airline should be pretty simple if you speak to their customer service department, but if you do not get the compensation you're entitled to then you would have to take the claim to an independent organisation, such as an approved alternative dispute resolution (ADR) body, or the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA)."
