Tom added: “This happened on the M61 J4 Near Westhoughton.

“I work for James Booth - a local company – and I was returning to the yard.

“Police cars and a helicopter were in pursuit.”

The video shows the car driving up the wrong way on the hard shoulder.

Another driver said: "There was quite a bit of a build-up on the motorway.

“There were a lot of people going slow to see what was going on.

"I think a lot of people would have been wondering why it was like that.

“When I saw it was on the wrong side of the hard shoulder it was worrying to think what had happened as it was quite a bit away from either junction.

“I just hope no-one was hurt and everyone was alright.

“I was coming back between junctions 7 and 6, and it was a between a blue and a purple-coloured car.

“It was facing the direction going towards junction 6 but was on the wrong side on the hard shoulder.

“There was a highways officer there with it too.”
