Members of a bowling club in Bolton recently celebrated 100 years of their club’s existence.

Longsight Bowling Club in Harwood celebrated their centenary on Saturday, June 18 after having officially opening on June 17, 1922.

Members celebrated the occasion with a pairs bowling competition, with the competition being opened by councillors Jacqueline Radcliffe and Stuart Haslam.

Cllr Radcliffe even bowled the first bowl of the day.

Tom Donlan, who photographed the event, deemed it to be a success.

He said: “The centenary was a huge celebration for the club, which is a well-loved community hub for local bowlers.”

He also thanked Les Donlan, who organised the event.

Stuart Houghton and Sue Smith won the competition and gained themselves a nice trophy in the process.

Originally called The Harwood Wesleyan Bowling Green, what is now Longsight Bowling Green used to be a brickfield.

Where now stands a smooth bowling green, there used to be kilns which were used for firing bricks.

The very first game on the green was played by H.E Shuttleworth and J. Scholes, both of whom had been prominent in the making of the green.
