A suspected burglar driving a car that had reportedly been stolen earlier this month has been chased down, boxed in and arrested by police.

Officers reported on Sunday that they spotted the clone Kia Niro on the M61, which they say they recognised as having been stolen in a burglary in Westhoughton earlier in June.

They then gave chase before eventually boxing the driver in on the M60 and arresting him on suspicion of burglary and theft of a motor vehicle.

A Greater Manchester Police spokesperson said: “A cloned Kia Niro was sighted on the M61, confirmed as outstanding stolen by means of burglary taken from Westhoughton earlier this month.

“The Safer Roads Tasking Team and ME21 boxed the vehicle in on the M60.

“The driver was arrested for burglary and theft of a motor vehicle.”

This comes amid recurring concerns about crime and cases of anti-social behaviour on the roads across Greater Manchester.

As well as thefts, this has included dangerous driving, drink and drug driving and speeding.

Police have urged anyone concerned about crime on the roads to get in touch by calling 101 or 999 in the event of an emergency.

Alternatively, witnesses can call independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
