THE owner of a wedding cake business has explained why she had to close - leaving customers in the lurch.

Whitney's Schofield's The Blackrod Cake Company closed on June 15, leaving some customers without a wedding cake.

Whitney told The Bolton News she has lost everything and understands the anger of customers.

She said: “Costs have increased dramatically over the last few months. We’ve not been paid for over a year, we aren’t taking any money out of the account.

“We couldn’t pay our own bills since June, we’ve been selling things like my engagement ring.”

She said: “I contacted everyone that had paid a deposit in the last seven days and refunded them then sent an email to everyone as we were advised and took down our social media.”

Whitney said she sent out an email to customers with advice on how to get a refund and including contacting the Citizens Advice Bureau.

She said the business account had been frozem.

Whitney said since the business closed she has received abuse and now police are involved.

Whitney said; “But then the abuse started. We have had messages sent to our children asking them for our home address.

“Someone arrived at the house and we had to call the police,  then more men turned up at our house because someone leaked our home address on a sex website.

“The police are now investigating- this and told us to move house.”

Whitney has apologised for the stress caused to customers and says it was not her intention to mislead anyone.

She said: “I have lost everything, my home and my business included and will be leaving our house, but I want people to realise that I did everything I could and lost it all.

“It was not a calculated move to deceive everyone, and I understand that people are angry and frustrated, but we have been put in such a difficult position.”

The couples who paid deposits had told The Bolton News of their distress as they had no cakes for their wedding day.

Lancashire Police have confirmed they are looking into the threats.
