Police used emergency stop and search powers after fears a fight could break out between youths in Great Lever.

Intelligence received via social media and from the community led to police being authorised to stop anyone in 'defined area at a specific time' and search them, as well as order them out of the area.

It is understood that the fight was being organised between young people - possibly recent school leavers who are sitting exams.

The Bolton News has previously reported how stop search powers have been implemented  across the borough following concerns about fights among young people and fears they could be equipped with weapons.

The latest powers were implemented in the Great Lever area.

While the order was in place three people were stopped and searched but no arrests were made.

Additionally there was a dispersal order in place at a local park where people were asked to leave the area.

A police meeting was called this week for residents living in Great Lever to speak to neighbourhood officers about concerns after stop and search powers were enhanced.

The community backed the use of the powers, praising the police's response to the intelligence received to keep people safe.

Cllr Madeline Murray, who represents the Great Lever ward, said she backed the move and said she would back a repeat in the future if necessary.

She said: “That was a sensible thing to do and I thank the police for doing it.

“I think it has to be an ongoing thing.

“It is about keeping people safe at the end of the day.

“The whole thing is just a horrible situation that they need to do it.”

Local headteacher Martin Knowles said: "I was impressed with Greater Manchester Police response and in reassuring the community."
