Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s position looks “almost impossible” according to a Bolton Conservative MP after two top ministers quit today.

This comes after both Chancellor Rishi Sunak and Health Secretary Sajid Javid both resigned from the government this evening saying they cannot continue serving under Boris Johnson after his handling of the Chris Pincher row.

Now, Conservative figures on Bolton have admitted that they are struggling to see how the prime minister can carry on.

Bolton West MP Chris Green said: “This puts the prime minister in an almost impossible position.

“The question is how long he can go on for and how he can reconstitute his cabinet but that now looks incredible doubtful.”

Bolton Council’s Conservative leader Cllr Martyn Cox agreed that it was now hard to see how Mr Johnson could stay in the role if he had “lost the confidence of his cabinet.”

The high profile resignations came after Mr Johnson was forced into a humiliating apology over his handling of the Chris Pincher row after it emerged he had forgotten about being told of previous allegations of “inappropriate” conduct.

Mr Pincher quit as deputy chief whip last week following claims that he groped two men at a private members’ club, but Mr Johnson was told about allegations against him as far back as 2019.

Bolton’s Labour politicians have gone further than their Conservative opponents and called for the prime minister to go.

Bolton South East MP Yasmin Qureshi said: “The resignation letters of Sunak and Javid tell us everything we already knew, the prime minister has no moral compass and its time to go.

“These are just the first two rats from the sinking ship of this government, my question would be, what has taken them so long to see what the public already knew.”

Bolton Labour leader Cllr Nick Peel agreed.

He said: "Yet again, the prime minister has been caught out lying, he seems to be trying to reshape politics in terms of lying just being an acceptable part of the job.

"His position is now untenable and there needs to be a lot more Tory MPs who are prepared to publicly distance themselves from him."
