A road in Radcliffe has been shut as emergency gas works take place.

The council said North Street has been closed between Bury Road and Ruskin Street to make way for a maintenance firm to carry out the works.

A spokesperson from the council advised drivers in a Twitter post that diversions are now in place via Bury Road, Spring Lane and Cross Lane.

The spokesperson said: "North Street, Radcliffe has been closed between Bury Road and Ruskin Street so that emergency gas works can be carried out.

"Diversions via Bury Road, Spring Lane and Cross Lane and vice versa."

Diversions have been put in place via surrounding roads.

A spokesperson for Network Plus, the company in charge of the work, said it is undertaking gas mains replacement work with the aim of upgrading older metal pipes to newer plastic ones, and patching up leaks.

Maintenance work on North Street is expected to last until Friday, July 15.

Works on Bury Road is set to be completed Friday, August 5.  Network Plus added that additional work on Orkney Street is expected to continue until that date too.
