Motorists travelling on the M6 could experience "severe" delays due to a lorry fire.

Lancashire Road Police have posted a message to motorists via its Twitter account.

Along with a picture of the scene, the post reads: “We are dealing with a vehicle fire on the M6 between jct 32 and 31a on the southbound carriageway. The M6 southbound is closed at jct 32. Traffic is being relieved that was stuck in the traffic and it is likely to be closed for a few hours. Please join at 31a southbound. Thanks”

If you’re looking to travel along the M6 today, you may need to reconsider your route since the road could be closed for a while longer.

Lancashire Police has also posted a warning to motorists via Twitter.

It reads: “** M6 SOUTHBOUND CLOSED J32 **

“Good morning all,

“Please be aware that the M6 Southbound at Junction 32 is currently closed due to a vehicle fire. We are working to get this reopened as soon as possible. Many thanks for your patience.”

National Highways: North West has posted to Twitter to update road users.

It warns motorists of “severe” delays, writing: “The #M6 in #Lancashire remains CLOSED southbound between J32 (#M55) and J31a (#Preston) following a lorry fire.

“The #M55 eastbound is also closed between J1 and the M6.

“Complex recovery is ongoing. There are SEVERE delays approaching both closures.”
