A Chadderton family has been left terrified after a man in a balaclava wielding a large knife wandered into their home.

In the early hours of this morning (August 8) a man with a knife, dressed in a black puffer jacket, gloves and balaclava, was caught on camera walking around the family’s living room at their home on Stirling Road in Chadderton.

Ashleigh Jones, 33, from Royton, was horrified after learning about the terrifying incident from her mother, Adelle, 56, and stepfather, Jay, 53, who was asleep in the living room at the time.

The couple have lived at the address for seven years and have never had anything like this happen before, according to Ashleigh.

She has shared videos of the intruder on Facebook this morning (August 8) that were captured by an indoor camera her mum uses to keep an eye on her pets while she is at work.

Alongside the video of the knifeman, her post reads: “At about 2:30am this morning Stirling Road, Chadderton this male, entered my mum’s house carrying a large knife.

“My stepdad was asleep on the chair and didn’t hear a thing, the guy walked around looking around the house but took nothing at all.

“Please all in Chadderton lock your doors.”

Ashleigh has shared the videos in a bid to spread awareness and warn others of the danger of leaving doors unlocked.

It is thought the intruder gained access into the house through the backdoor which used to be left open to allow the couple's cats to get in and out.

In one of the videos, the man can be seen creeping around the living room with a knife and peering at Ashleigh’s stepfather before leaving.

Speaking to The Oldham Times, Ashleigh said: “Thankfully everyone is okay, it’s horrifying knowing someone was walking around with a knife that close to my stepdad all while he was asleep.

“My mum said the guy was looking through cupboards, but we don’t think he has taken anything, so we don’t know what the motive behind it is.

"She said at some point he adjusted his balaclava and was a white male."

Greater Manchester Police has been contacted but it is understood the incident has been reported to police.
