Double yellow lines are set to be painted on roads near schools and hospitals.

Bolton Council has given the green light to waiting restriction at various points on Minerva Road, Waters Edge and Harper Green Road at a cost of more than £3,500 in total.

The roads are used to access Royal Bolton Hospital and Mount St Joseph School - as well as the junction of Minerva Road and Braford Road which will also have double yellow lines.

Cllr Paul Heslop, who attended the meeting, said: “There’s a huge issue with traffic regulation orders because it’s a case of the time it takes to actually get the yellow paint on the ground.”

He added: “Getting the final installation of these yellow lines can take years in some case.”

Cllr Heslop added that he hoped to make similar progress on double yellow lines in his Kearsley ward -  following the examples set on Minerva Road, Waters Edge and Harper Green.

The new restrictions will mean that no waiting will be allowed at any time on the south side of Minerva Road from a point 15 metres east of its junction with Bradford Road to its junction with Waters Edge.

Waiting will also be forbidden on both sides of Brian Road from its junction with Minerva Road for a distance of 15 metres in a southerly direction, with the same restrictions in place at two points along Waters Edge.

This will include the north west side from its junction with Minerva Road for a distance of 18 metres in a north-westerly direction and the south east side from its junction with Minerva Road for a distance of 14 metres in a north-westerly direction

Residents had prevously raised concerns about the parking of private cars and minibuses in the area which was blocking off their access.

A public consultation attracted 41 responses, 22 of them supporting the new restrictions and 19 opposing them.

The council estimates that the cost of the traffic order will come to £3,168 while painting the double yellow lines themselves will cost £400.
