A man who was jailed for going on a crime spree in a Batman dressing gown has been told he must serve an extra six weeks in prison for shoplifting.

Ryan Haywood, of Prospect Avenue, Farnworth, was sentenced to 18 months imprisonment in May this year.

He carried out a string of offences in April after he had discharged himself from the Royal Bolton Hospital following a drug overdose.

While friends were looking for him he entered multiple homes and stole items, interfered with vehicles and later bit two officers who tried to arrest him.

The 29-year-old was also found to have a knife on him.

He was jailed at Bolton Crown Court after admitting two counts of assault by beating of an emergency worker, three counts of burglary with theft, two counts of vehicle interference, theft and possession of a knife in a public place.

He has now appeared at Wigan and Leigh Magistrates' Court to be sentenced for three counts of theft from shops which he had pleaded guilty to.

Pam Ward, prosecuting, said he stole from Lidl on Albert Road in Bolton on February 1, and the Tesco store on Long Causeway, Farnworth, on February 8 and 10.

On the first occasion he stole 24 packets of bacon worth £54.

On the second he stole five jars of coffee worth £24 and the next time he visited the store he took six jars worth 336.

Jane Novos-Morrell, defending, asked for a concurrent sentence to be imposed alongside the one he was serving.

But chair of the bench Sara Moreton rejected this.

She said: “These offences are so serious only a custodial sentence is appropriate, for each of the three thefts we are going to give you a two-week prison sentence

“It will be consecutive.”

She also ordered Haywood to pay compensation of £54 to Lidl and £60 to Tesco when he is released from prison.
