A high-flying student celebrating her A-levels helped launch a rocket just days before her results.

Sofia Carrera-Knowles at Bolton School only just got back from her space camp in Norway, where she amongst 20 others, was lucky enough to help launch a rocket.

The 18-year-old returned to the delightful results of one A* and two A’s in A* in electronics, maths physics.

Space fan Sofia will be undertaking an aerospace engineering degree with BAE systems, something she is most passionate about.

She said: “My brother did it too and now he’s a robotic engineer.

“I’m really into space and just came back a week ago from space camp in Norway.

“There were people all over the world like Latvia and Croatia, and there were only 20 of us who had been chosen to go.

“It was absolutely amazing to see the launch.”

Bolton School encourages its students to pursue hobbies and passions like Sofia with space.

Sofia is also one of the lucky few to have seen bits of the moon and mars at the space camp.

She said: “I want to learn how to fly, and they can teach you at BAE systems.

“I just want as much experience as possible to go into it because I love space and I love the idea of flying too.”

Head of Foundation Philip Britton said the students had the most disruptions to education since WW2.

He said: “Today is all about celebrating individual achievements by students whose education has seen the most disruption of any year group since World War Two.

“Their achievements should be celebrated all the more when we take into consideration that we are still in a pandemic recovery period.

“I am delighted for both the girls and boys and their teachers who have supported and guided them through some difficult times.”

“It has been a long journey, with the process that brought us to this point beginning over two years ago with the teaching of pre-A levels.

“The students’ outstanding achievement is down to hard work and perseverance.”

Sofia will follow in her brothers footsteps at BAE systems in Preston.
