Dementia patients at Royal Bolton Hospital will have more support to ‘stimulate and benefit’ their minds thanks to a charity fund raiser.
This comes after Bolton NHS Foundation Trust’s Enhanced Care and Support Team and their family members helped to raise hundreds of pounds through a charity bake sale.
The money will now be put to good use, funding activities for dementia patients during their stay at the hospital.
Senior ECaST Practitioner Hayley Mason said: “The money will be used to buy distraction therapy equipment for our dementia patients.
“Distraction therapy is so important because it’s about treating the patient’s mind, not just their body.
“Sometimes a patient might not want to eat, drink or take their medication or get up out of bed, but by offering a distraction, like a game of dominoes for example, then while they’re sat up in their chair they’ll have a drink.
“It’s mentally stimulating and benefits their minds.
“Thank you to everyone who got involved and helped raise so much to help our patients!”
Ms Mason herself along with volunteer Robin Usher took part in the fund raising efforts by dressing up to entice people to their stall earlier this week on Tuesday August 23.
Photographs from the stall show Ms Mason and Mr Usher dressed as a clown and circus ringmaster as they invited people to the stall.
As well as cakes for sale, visitors had the chance to play well-loved fairground favorites like hook-a-duck and a steady hand game.
Staff at the hospital proved eager to try their hands last Tuesday, but as managers explained the money that they raised while doing so will prove to be much more long lasting, with a total of £250.65 having been raised for dementia patients.

Bolton NHS Foundation Trust deputy chief nurse Angela Hansen said: “Providing the care our patients need is instrumental in helping them to recover.
“We never stop looking for ways to provide the highest level of care for our patients and I am so proud of the Enhanced Care and Support Team for their patient-focused approach.”
