A 'far-right group' were near a Bolton Wanderers match yesterday before being moved on.

A banner appearing to belong to the notorious political party Britain First, which is defined by anti-Fascist charity Hope Not Hate as ‘far-right’, appeared outside the University of Bolton Stadium yesterday during Wanderers’ fixture against Charlton Athletic FC.

Wanderers fans have reported feeling extremely shocked, saddened and angered by the far-right group’s behaviour, with some of the fans confronting them.

One fan, who was going to the match with his son and friend, said: “We saw it and we saw them turn the banner round so it was clear to people going to the ground.

“My friend, my son and I just could not believe what we were seeing.”

The message on the banner read ‘putting British people first’ and included the emblem of the notorious political party, which has never succeeded in winning an electoral seat anywhere in the UK.

The fan descirbed their actions as 'promoting hate' and explained that the van provoked an angry reaction from many of the Wanderers supporters.

One in particular, who is of dual heritage, moved to confront the far-right group.

He said: “One of Bolton’s better known fans, shall we say, went up to them and told them in no uncertain terms to move on.”

He added: “He was absolutely offended by what he’d seen.”

This comes amid huge efforts by the club and the vast majority of fans to promote inclusivity and tolerance at games.

The fan said: “The club at the moment is putting so many positive messages out about diversity and inclusivity and we really don’t want to go back to the seventies and eighties.”

He added: “It was just a shock really, I really was shocked to see it, its put a dampener on what was a really great day.”

Bolton Wanders FC have confirmed that they acted to remove the van.

A spokesperson for the club said: “As soon as we were aware of the vehicle’s presence we liaised with local police and ensured it was moved on.”

Greater Manchester Police have confirmed that they recieved a report of the incident at around 12.45pm yesterday.
