HORROR master George A Romero returns to cinemas tomorrow with his latest zombie film, Diary Of The Dead.
Following on from Night of the Living Dead, Dawn of the Dead, Day of the Dead and Land of the Dead (anyone spot a theme? And when's he going to release Teatime of the Dead?), Romero describes his latest offering as an attempt to go back "under the radar", and he has adopted a DIY-approach to the filming, shooting scenes on handheld DV cameras, which seems to be terribly fashionable at the moment.
As someone who was scared by Shaun of the Dead, I wouldn't mind if no-one ever made another zombie film, and Romero's latest offering is unlikely to be the height of artistic achievement.
But for his fans it doesn't matter. As long as there are brainless monsters chasing someone, they're happy. The most complaints I've ever heard were about Land of the Dead, in which the zombies got a bit clever. You can keep your Coen brothers and your Gondrys - Romero knows that sometimes it doesn't pay to be too smart .
