If you’re anything like me the past few years have been interesting, to say the least, when it comes to working arrangements. I’ve worked remotely, from home and from the office - I’ve come to the conclusion that a hybrid way of working is the future, for journalists at least.
Despite currently being fortunate enough to be flexible about where I work, usually opting for three days from the office and two days at home, I do enjoy a change of scenery.
That’s why I jumped at the chance to try out a day of working remotely followed by an overnight stay at the four-star North Lakes Hotel and Spa in Penrith.
I currently live in Lancaster, so the Daniel Thwaites-owned hotel is only around a 45-minute drive away, meaning I could get there in the time I’d usually set aside for a lunch break. From Bolton it'd take you about 90 minutes by car, traffic permitting. If you’re not a driver and prefer to travel by train, North Lakes is less than a mile away from Penrith station.
When I arrived not long after midday on a Wednesday I was slightly surprised by how many cars were already parked there - which shows the hotel is clearly popular mid-week. However, there were plenty of spaces available and I even spied electric charging points.
Check-in at reception was straightforward and took no time at all - I’d arranged for an early check-in so I could get some work done in my room. However, it really wouldn’t have mattered had it not been an option, as there is ample space in the bar and eating area where you could set up a laptop.
I also noticed there was a lot of outdoor sitting space too that could be taken advantage of on a nice day, with the option of having umbrellas up for those who prefer to sit in the shade when sunny. It’s worth noting that no matter where I walked or worked on the large complex during my stay, the WiFi was strong and stable, to quote a former Prime Minister.
After a walk around the hotel, noting the location of the spa and pool, I decided it was time to head up to the room. There was plenty of space - I was travelling alone but it would have been absolutely fine for two guests. Each room comes with the usual amenities, but also fluffy robes and slippers which I thought were a nice touch.
I spied a fan had already been set up given the temperature outside (I was visiting during the August heatwave) which was a welcome relief. Another great feature of the venue is that each floor has ice-cold water dispensers in the hallway - and cold, fresh milk dispensers too, meaning no trips down to the bar for refills or relying on UHT.
Given how hot it was I decided to cool off in the shower before getting to work. The bathroom was beautifully designed and the shower was powerful.
After that, I decided I better get set up for my next meeting. I decided to work in my room given there was plenty of space and helped myself to a complimentary espresso from the machine in my room. There was no shortage of desk space and it was a welcome change of scene from the office.
Once I’d gotten work out of the way, I decided to take a dip. When I arrived, I’d noticed that the spacious pool was actually quite empty - as were the steam room and jacuzzi. However, when I headed down at around 5.30pm it was busy, with lots of families enjoying themselves. Given the weather and the fact it was the summer holidays, this wasn’t a surprise but it’s worth thinking about if you like a quieter environment.
I was able to get some lengths in and then have a few minutes respite in the steam room before heading to the changing room to don my robe and head back to the room for a shower and to get ready for dinner. There are big changing rooms for those guests who prefer not to walk around the hotel in a dressing gown - and also a gym for those keener on exercise than I am.
After another delightful shower - made even better with complimentary body wash from The White Company, I got changed and decided to order a glass of wine to have whilst I unpacked. It’s not a free service to have items delivered to your room (the delivery was about £3) but I thought why not, I was treating myself.
Before long it was time to head down for dinner at North Lakes’ grill restaurant, FYR, at which reception had booked a table for me at 8pm. It's worth noting that you need to book in advance, as you have to do for breakfast. I was able to sit just outside the restaurant and enjoy the breathtaking sunset along with a glass of white wine. While they didn’t have my usual tipple of Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc, the waitress was able to recommend a similar taste that hailed from Chile - and it was delicious.
While I was recommended a steak, I couldn’t help but order a seafood platter and a side of chips cooked in goose fat (because who says goose fat has to be just for Christmas?). It didn’t take long for the food to arrive and the staff couldn’t have been more accommodating or eager - it really was a brilliant dining experience. To be honest, I think my eyes were bigger than my belly, and I really struggled to finish my meal - which meant I sadly had to turn down dessert.
Even though I’d decided I didn’t want any more food - and despite the fact there wasn’t exactly a shortage of guests wanting to sink their jaws into the grub - I wasn’t made to feel like I had to hasten my departure. After a while, I decided I’d retire from the table and enjoy the rest of my wine whilst enjoying the view.
Once the evening had drawn to a close I decided to hit the hay. While there were four pillows already on the bed, there were another two stored in the cupboard for those who believe more equals better (as I do). I had a great night’s sleep and woke up in the morning feeling really refreshed.
I headed down for breakfast which was served in the FYR restaurant. There was a great range of options and I decided to opt for my favourite eggs Benedict along with a pot of tea and a glass of orange juice. I didn’t have to wait long and the meal was sumptuous and beautifully presented.
The hotel staff were able to arrange a last-minute treatment for me in the spa before I checked out and I decided to opt for a facial. My beauty therapist provided lots of detail about the products she was going to apply and how they'd benefit my skin.
She also made the room cooler for me as I've never enjoyed being too hot during treatments and was more than happy to swap out the scalp massage (I don't love having oil in my hair) for a foot treatment.
The whole experience was so relaxing and my skin looked really rejuvenated after the treatment. Once the treatments had concluded I was shown to a quiet area where I could sit and enjoy the ambience in my fluffy robe, accompanied by some refreshing treats and ice-cold water.
Sadly, I had to check out shortly afterwards - it was nice and speedy and before long I was on my way home, feeling much more relaxed on the drive back than I had on my way to the hotel.
My overall thoughts on a midweek stay
North Lakes Hotel and Spa certainly lived up to being a four-star establishment; the food, service and amenities were absolutely spot on and I didn't have any complaints. While I visited for a mid-week change of scenery, it's certainly a great choice for those looking for a getaway in the Lake District. I spotted the venue had an outdoor firepit, as well as a huge fireplace in reception, both of which I imagine, are a brilliant addition to guests staying during colder months (as I hope to do later in the year).

The hotel is located just off the M6 and is around a 10-minute walk from Penrith train station. Nearby attractions include the stunning sights of the Lake District National Park. Two of the region’s most famous attractions are the Ullswater Way and Aira Force which are within easy reach of the hotel. For the best rates, book direct.
The hotel caters for all group sizes, from individuals to couples and families, with double rooms, suites and family rooms (which include bunk beds for kids) to choose from.
North Lakes Hotel and Spa also has seven dog-friendly rooms - whilst pooches aren’t allowed in the restaurant, they can go in the bar and lobby area, as well as the outdoor dining area and meadow.
In addition to a gym and relaxation rooms, guests can enjoy the sauna, steam room and heated full-length swimming pool. Beauty treatments on offer include facials, massages and manicures.
